Stay Safe This Winter – All Star Automotive Group

It’s time to ensure that both you and your vehicle are ready for the winter! Driving can be a little tricky during the colder months of the year and your vehicle needs to be prepared. Winter Air temperatures here in Louisiana typically range 40- to 50-degrees Fahrenheit colder than typical summer temperatures, which means tire pressures naturally change. Tire pressure should be checked weekly because of the temperature drop. Low tire pressures wastes fuel and more importantly, causes the tire to run hotter from the extra friction. Your vehicle’s tires should have between 3-5 psi higher than normal pressure for winter driving. Pressure increase helps offset reduced hot tires.

All tire pressures are meant to be measured in a cold state. This means the tires are at the same temperature as the outside air. If you park your vehicle outside or in an unheated area such as a detached garage, it is best to measure tire pressures first thing in the morning. Cold mornings are a hassle already, but this is when tire pressures are ideal. If you were to measure your tire pressure at any other time, you are recording useless data because the tires are not completely cold.

Check your vehicles manual for dashboard lights and meanings. If you are unable to check your tire pressure yourself, it is possible that your vehicle will let you know of low tire pressures on its own. Look for a warning light that looks like an exclamation point with parenthesis around it. This light will automatically turn on if your tire pressure is low. Take this caution light seriously and cater to your tires.

Also, be sure to fuel your vehicle fully in case your tires go out while driving and you are forced to stop. Pull over to a safe location with your hazard lights on for everyone to see. Staying noticed and letting drivers be aware of your location is essential for your safety. A full tank of gas will allow you stay warm while you wait for help. Back to School for Your Car Too!

Back to School Road Sign

Although it may still feel like summer time outside, back-to-school time is right around the corner. August is always a busy month for parents and kids. Parents are trying to squeeze in last minute vacations and the kids are wanting to play with their friends all day! One item that is not usually on the top of the to-do list when heading back to school is your vehicle maintenance. Whether you’re attending high school, heading back to college or you’re the chauffeur for your family, your vehicle is going to need a little TLC before heading back to school and work!

Under the Hood

Open up your hood and check your fluid levels of engine oil, coolant and transmission, and brake and power steering fluid. Your owner’s manual will illustrate where everything is located and the proper levels to maintain! Also while you are under the hood, check for any leaks and locate the source if there are leaks. Check the battery also.

Check the Tires

Check the tires for uneven tread wear, nails or other potential hazards. One easy way to check tread depth is inserting a penny into a groove—if any part of Abe Lincoln’s head is obscured, you have enough tread. Check the pressure on each tire with a gauge when they’re cold (not driven). Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s suggested pressure, which is located on most vehicles on a sticker inside the driver’s door, center console, glove compartment lid or in the owner’s manual. Also, make sure the spare tire is inflated and a jack, lug wrench and jumper cables are in the trunk!

Check the Lights

This is a good time to get your kids involved in the preventive maintenance checklist review. Have him or her get in the car and turn on the headlights, turn signals and emergency flashing lights as you walk around the vehicle to make sure they are working. Check the brake lights by having him or her press the brake pedal, too. Vehicles can have many different types of bulbs and they have varying lifespans, according to Firestone. Inspect your vehicle regularly to ensure your lights are working properly.

Make sure to schedule a service appointment with one of our certified technicians that will be able to service your vehicle and get you back on the road! Doing routine maintenance on your vehicle will not only ensure your safety on the road, but it will also prolong the life of your vehicle!

Buckle-Up!

Now that your vehicle is serviced, you are ready to get on the road! Make sure you buckle up every single time you get in your vehicle. Even if you are driving down the road to a friend’s house or the grocery store, protecting yourself and your passengers in the vehicle is the most important thing. Set the example by always wearing your seat belt!

Stay Alert

Stay alert and focused! This is especially important if you are taking a road trip and driving early in the morning or late at night. Make sure you take stops along your route to stretch, get something to eat and drink, return calls or text messages and change drivers if you are feeling tired or drowsy. If your trip is more than a 10-12 hour drive, consider staying overnight at a hotel or family resort so you are well rested for the remainder of your drive.

Double Check those Babies

Keep kids and pets safe in the car at all times. Make sure your children are properly secured in their car seats and booster seats. Also make sure they remain seated and buckled in when the vehicle is in motion. If you are traveling with a pet, make sure the animal is properly secured in a harness or dog seat belt. Here are some different options for a dog seat belt if you are traveling with a larger dog. Pets are part of the family, so make sure they are properly secured also!

These are some great tips to remember if you are about to take a long road trip, or just for your daily commutes to work and doing errands! Summer time is a great chance to spend some much needed time with family and friends, but always remember these tips to stay safe this summer and you will be ready for any adventure thrown your way!
