Whether you are heading to the beach with friends, taking a road trip with your family, or commuting back and forth to work, it is important that your vehicle is ready and properly prepared for the summer months. That is why All Star Automotive Group has compiled a list of vehicle tips to ensure that you will stay safe on your summer road trip!

Get your Vehicle Serviced

Before you get on the road, get your vehicle serviced. Regular maintenance such as oil changes, battery checked and tire rotations will go a long way towards preventing breakdowns. If your vehicle has not been serviced according to the manufacture’s recommendations, schedule a maintenance checkup with us right away! You can schedule a service appointment by clicking here or calling any of our 11 dealerships!

Emergency Kit Prepared

Also remember to pack and emergency roadside kit. Even a well-maintained vehicle can break down or get a flat tire, so it is important to be prepared for any situation thrown your way. Click here to view some awesome emergency roadside kits!

Buckle-Up!

Now that your vehicle is serviced, you are ready to get on the road! Make sure you buckle up every single time you get in your vehicle. Even if you are driving down the road to a friend’s house or the grocery store, protecting yourself and your passengers in the vehicle is the most important thing. Set the example by always wearing your seat belt!

Stay Alert

Stay alert and focused! This is especially important if you are taking a road trip and driving early in the morning or late at night. Make sure you take stops along your route to stretch, get something to eat and drink, return calls or text messages and change drivers if you are feeling tired or drowsy. If your trip is more than a 10-12 hour drive, consider staying overnight at a hotel or family resort so you are well rested for the remainder of your drive.

Double Check those Babies

Keep kids and pets safe in the car at all times. Make sure your children are properly secured in their car seats and booster seats. Also make sure they remain seated and buckled in when the vehicle is in motion. If you are traveling with a pet, make sure the animal is properly secured in a harness or dog seat belt. Here are some different options for a dog seat belt if you are traveling with a larger dog. Pets are part of the family, so make sure they are properly secured also!

These are some great tips to remember if you are about to take a long road trip, or just for your daily commutes to work and doing errands! Summer time is a great chance to spend some much needed time with family and friends, but always remember these tips to stay safe this summer and you will be ready for any adventure thrown your way!

Summer Heat Tech Tips

ASAG & ASC

We all know how blistering hot it can get in Louisiana during the summer time, and getting into a hot car is no fun. You burn your legs on your hot leather seats, you feel like you need to wear oven mitts to touch your steering wheel and your dripping sweat before you even start your car! Summer can be tough on cars, especially during high temperatures when heat can destroy batteries and stress the cooling system and tires. As a precaution, these vehicle components should be checked periodically during summer to help avoid breakdowns and car problems. All Star Automotive Group is here with some awesome summer tech tips to make sure your car is in perfect condition for the hot Louisiana weather.

  • Tires need special care in warmer weather as high temperatures put added stress on them. To maximize tire life and safety, check the tire condition and inflation pressure monthly. It is also good to have the tires rotated every 5,000 – 6,000 miles. Summer heat will cause the pressure within a tire to rise, therefore, it’s important to check the pressure when tires are cold. You vehicle’s owner manual includes the recommended air pressure for your vehicle’s tires.
  • Sunshades are sometimes metallic and look almost like aluminum foil stretched across the inside of a windshield. Others, especially ones designed for back seat windows, have child-friendly designs such as Winnie the Pooh on them. Their use is obvious: they keep the sun from reaching the inside of the car and heating up the seats. If you do not have a sunshade, you should try to park away from the sun. Parking in the shade or in a garage is also highly effective and recommended whenever possible!
  • The key to summer driving is keeping the engine cool. We’re going to talk about the radiator and coolant soon, but first you need to check the hoses and belts. The hoses connected to the radiator help pump coolant to and from the engine block, and the belts run the fan that helps cool the system further. If the hoses crack or the belts snap, the radiator will quickly overheat, leaving you stranded.
  • Check hoses for cracks, leaks and loose connections. Hoses should be firm, never soft and malleable. Hoses suffer from a slow deterioration process called electrochemical degradation (ECD) that eats away at rubber hose material from the inside. The most vulnerable parts of the hose are those nearest to clamps where the hose connects to the radiator or the engine.
  • Belts can also be visually checked for cracks and damage. Take note if the belt looks excessively slick or smooth. Remove the belt to make sure that the material hasn’t started separating into different layers. Experts say the risk of belt failure rises dramatically after 36,000 miles.
