
The flooding in South Louisiana that has taken place on August 13th has impacted thousands of people right here in our home town. Thousands of Louisianans are coming together to help strangers evacuate their homes and bring them to shelters. Families have been ripped apart, homes have been flooded to the rooflines with water and cars have been flooded and lost in 10 foot waters. But this will not stop the citizens of Louisiana. We will come out stronger than ever all while helping each other out more than ever. Here at All Star, we pride ourselves in supporting our local communities and truly believe that together we the people of Louisiana are an “ALL STAR FAMILY.”

Wondering how to help in the community? We have put a list together of just a few of the many ways to help give back to our community, during this time of need.
Many shelters have opened all around Louisiana, to help those that are in need during this historic event. The America Red Cross has stepped in and is currently helping at least 4,700 people in dozens of emergency shelters. Many other places such as churches, schools and event centers are coming together to provide shelter, food and clean clothes.
SHELTER NEEDS:
Lamar Dixon in Gonzales, 9039 S St Landry Ave, Gonzales, LA 70737, is in need of volunteers as well as:
- Pillows
- Blankets
- Towels
- Clothes – adults and children clothing,
- Underwear (new in package)
- Ziploc bags
Lamar Dixon is also providing free housing for animals all the way from horses and goats to cats and dogs. Volunteers are needed to help clean cages, feed, and water these helpless animals.
The Baton Rouge River Center, 275 S River Rd, 70802 Baton Rouge, LA, has been turned into a shelter and is also requesting for pillows, blankets, new children’s clothing from 18 months – 2t and new socks/underwear. River Center is above capacity but is NOT turning away evacuees.
The City of Denham Springs, and Healing Place Church, are working together to establish a distribution center to meet the needs of individuals in our community. Donations for the center can be dropped off at Healing Place’s Denham Springs campus, located in the 600 block of Florida Boulevard behind Whitney Bank. The following items are being are currently being accepted:
- Water
- MRE’s
- Heavy duty contractor trash bags
- Wheelbarrows
- Metal scoop shovels
- Utility knives (cutting carpet/Sheetrock)
- N95 masks
- Gloves
- Crowbars
- 5 gallons buckets to put tools in
- Hammers
- A chalk line to cut out the Sheetrock clean line
- Tape measure
- Screw drivers that are interchangeable to from flathead and phillip
- Push brooms
- Safety glasses
- Snow shovels
- Mops
- Clam shells
- Hygiene items
- Baby items
- Diapers
- Wipes
- Pet food
- Cardboard boxes
- Tarps
- Cleaning supplies
- Paper products
- Garbage cans
The Salvation Army is accepting toiletries, water, and monetary donations at the Cortana mall beginning at noon Tuesday, August 16. Other donation items that will be accepted are toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper, soap, shampoo, and cleaning supplies. Please no diapers or used clothing at this time. PETS:
Sherwood South Animal Hospital on South Sherwood Forest Blvd. is offering to house pets. They’ve also got doctors on hand. Residents can call (225) 293-6440 for more information.
A mobile pet shelter has been set up at the Baton Rouge River Center on 275 S River Rd.
The ASPCA has dispatched a disaster response team to conduct animal water rescues. The ASPCA is working with the Louisiana State Animal Response Team (LSART) to coordinate local resources. Residents who need assistance recovering an animal from their flooded home or who need emergency shelter for their animal should contact the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (OHSEP). EBR Animal Control on 2680 Progress Road, Baton Rouge 70807 is serving as an animal shelter.

Airbnb is waiving service fees for those affected by the flooding across southeast Louisiana who check in between August 14 and September 4. Available homes can be found here.

Thousands of homes, sentimental belongings and precious memories were ripped away from the people of South Louisiana. If there is any way you can volunteer a few hours of your day or donate clothing or supplies to any of these shelters, please do so.
