All Star Automotive Group’s Winter Vehicle Tips

2.pngAs the cool air approaches, we all need to be aware of how to keep our vehicles up to optimum performance. South Louisiana climate doesn’t always allow us to put winter vehicle maintenance at the top of mind. Well, you no longer have to be in the dark on how to keep your vehicle in great shape for the winter months. The All Star Family is here to shed some light on great winter vehicle tips!

Have you been holding off for an oil change? Well procrastinate no more! Your vehicle should have the right viscosity, or thickness of oil at this time of year. Oil tends to thicken as the temperature drops, and if it is too thick, it would not do the best job of lubricating your vehicle’s engine. Being able to see in conditions when there may be a little ice on the road is imperative. When was the last time your windshield wiper blades were replaced? Wiper blades are usually good for six months to one year depending on the usage, so be sure to change your blades if you are due.  Also, fill up your windshield reservoir with windshield fluid, because plain water would not do this time of year, as it freezes.

These are just a few vehicle tips to keep your vehicle running at optimum performance during the colder months. Even though this is South Louisiana, it is better to be prepared and care for your vehicle properly when the harsh weather times arrive. Schedule your service appointment with us today!

Have a Game Plan for Fall Service

car-maintenance-the-bare-minimum.jpg

With fall quickly approaching, it is important to have your vehicle ready for the chilly temperatures ahead. Although it does not snow or get too terribly cold here in South Louisiana, you still need to have your car service and ready for the fall weather that will soon be upon us! All Star Automotive has compiled a few tips and recommendations in order to get your vehicle in tip-top shape before the season changes!

  • Check your battery

Keeping your battery connections clean, tight and corrosion-free are highly important! The summer months were tough on your car battery, but the cold weather can be every tougher if you don’t properly take care of your vehicle’s battery. In addition, if your vehicle’s battery is older than three-years-old, we recommend you look at replacing it sometime soon. Batteries don’t give a warning on when they start failing, so it is always better to be safe than sorry!

  • Heater, Defrosters and Wiper Blades

Make sure to check that the heating, ventilating and air conditioning system are working properly. Heating and cooling performance is vital for those cold mornings and hot afternoons and for safety reasons! The last thing you want is to be late to school or work because you’re defroster was not working! In addition, checking your wiper blades is just as important. In Louisiana, we tend to have lots of afternoon showers. This leads to worn out wiper blades and streaky windshields.

  • Tires

Checking your tires, tire pressure and treat depth before seasons change is very important. Uneven wear can indicate a need for wheel alignment. During the colder months, tire pressure should be checked weekly because tires lose pressure when the temperatures drop.

These are just a few things All Star Automotive suggests you check before the fall season rolls around! Taking care of your vehicle and routinely getting it serviced will ensure your vehicle will last a lot longer! Have an All-Star Year!

ASAG - Have an All-Star Year Pic

Hello, 2016! We’ve been waiting for you and oh so happy that you are finally here!

We hope each of you had a wonderful 2015 year. As the New Year has begun, many of you have probably written New Year’s resolutions.

Here are 10 Automotive New Year’s Resolutions from our team here at All Star Automotive that we suggest you keep:

1. Get regular oil changes.  Check your owner’s manual to see how often your car needs an oil change. Most vehicles need an oil change about every 3,000 miles. It is crucial to take care of your car to ensure it runs smoothly.

2. Don’t text and drive. Keep yourself and others around you as safe as possible. No text is worth a life.

3. Get a courtesy inspection. Let us help you keep your car in tip-top shape. Stop in to our dealership and our service team will give you a complimentary 27-point inspection to ensure your car is running as it should. Schedule your service online!

4. Let drivers merge. It is dangerous not to let someone over and it could result in a wreck. Be aware of the drivers around you and their needs, as well as your own.

5. Have your tires rotated. The year brings about many different seasons of weather. Your tires can get run down and will need to be adjusted and rotated to prevent wear and unevenness. Make sure you do this regularly.

6. Organize your paperwork. This enables you to be prepared in any situation. Keep your paperwork up-to-date and handy. In the event that you’re asked for your “license and registration,” (which we hope doesn’t happen), you’ll be ready.

7. Clean out your car. Let’s face it, your car deserves it. Take it through the car wash and vacuum it out. Throw out those empty water bottles, old receipts and snack wrappers. Hang an air freshener from your rear view mirror and it’ll feel good as new!

8. Change your air filter. Air filters need to be checked and changed, much like a home air filter. If not changed routinely, you are less protected from dangerous gases emitted from other vehicles while driving. It’s worth it!

9. Perfect your parking. 2015 can be the year that you become a parking master. If you always pull forward into a parking space, try backing in! Don’t miss that front row spot because it means you’ll have to parallel park! The more you practice, the more confident you will feel. Don’t worry; you’ll be a pro in no time.

10. Work on your road rage. I know it’s easy to get frustrated at other drivers. However, whether it is a fellow driver failing to use their blinker or cutting you off, it’s not worth getting angry over. Anger can distract you as a driver and can cause you to make impulsive decisions. Drive happy!

We hope you take these vehicle New Year’s resolutions into consideration! At All Star Automotive, we care about you and want you to drive safely and happily.

Changing my Oil

When Should I Change my Oil?

Most vehicle manufacturers recommend changing the oil in your vehicle once a year or every 7,500 miles, and some even recommend every 10,000 miles in passenger cars and light truck gasoline engines.   For diesel engines and turbocharged gasoline engines, the usual recommendation is every 3,000 miles or six months.

There seems to be some mixed feelings and ideas on this.  If you ask different companies you may get an answer stating that this is for vehicles which are driven under ideal circumstances.  What exactly are ideal circumstances?  What we consider normal driving may actually be considered severe driving in certain states.  Stop and go traffic and frequent short trips in cold weather, driving at highway speeds in hot weather and dusty or gravel roads and carrying heavy loads are all severe driving.  For this type of driving it is recommended that you change your oil every 3000 miles. This is not to say that everyone needs to start changing their oil every 3000 miles.  If you primarily drive on the interstate and have a newer car you should probably follow your manufacturers recommendations.  Most newer cars come equipped with an oil monitoring system and a light inside the car will come on to let you know when it is time to change the oil.  A new engine can probably go 7,500 miles between oil changes.  Manufacturers have developed new technology and have created better engines, but they can’t ride with you and make you drive better, nor do they know your driving habits, a good estimate and, what we recommend is to change your oil every 5ooo miles.

Why Change the Oil?

As miles build up more unburned fuel is dumped into the crankcase diluting the oil and causing the oil to break down.  Not changing the oil often enough causes accelerated wear and engine problems.  Oil breaks down due to high operating temperatures, causing a loss of lubrication and without enough lubrication those engine parts rub against each other and wear out.   Also remember to check your oil levels between oil changes because eventually all engines will burn oil, so you may avoid an engine meltdown one day.
