Road Trip Food Tips from All Star Automotive!

Son and daughter (6-10) helping father load luggage in back of cWith the arrival of summer comes a season of fun, sun and of course road trips! While all-day car trips are full of fun and adventure, if you’re not prepared, they can quickly turn into disasters. Part of a road trip preparation is ensuring that you are well-prepared with nutritious snacks and drinks- just because you’re stuck in the car for hours doesn’t mean you can’t eat healthy! We’ve put together a list of excellent food-on-the-go tips to help you stay healthy and satisfied while on the road.

Keep Food Cool

Invest in an insulated cooler to keep perishables cool for your trip. Load up the cooler with sandwiches, salads, low-fat dairy products, fresh fruits, cut vegetables and water bottles.

Prepare Healthy Meals In Advance

Keep all your food in containers that are easily accessible and spill proof. Sandwiches can be kept in baggies, and fresh cut fruits/veggies can be stored in Ziploc bags or Tupperware containers.

Choose Neat Snacks

When it comes to snack foods, finger foods are the easiest option for a car ride because they cause the least amount of mess. Try to choose foods that can be eaten in one sitting.

Eat When Hungry, Not When Bored

Road trips are fun, but everybody hits that infamous point of boredom and “are we there yet.” Many people fall into the trap of eating too much during a road trip due to boredom, so be sure to pack light in amounts of any food other than veggies. Set aside specific portions in small containers or buy prepackaged healthy food items that come in small proportions. For your kids; bring games, iPods, drawing pads, word finds, coloring books, books on tape, etc. to keep their minds occupied on things other than their stomachs!

Beverages

Water and Unsweetened Tea with fruit are always the best choices when consuming beverages, and it should be no different when traveling. It always seems as though we get thirstier when stuck in a car for long periods of time, so avoid sodas, sports drinks and other sugary drinks. Go for pop-tops that are easily opened and closed- these containers control the amount of the drink that comes out and keep messes to a minimum. Freeze water bottles the night before your trip so they’ll stay cold for hours, and you won’t have to use up room in your cooler!
