Hyundai recently revealed their new HCD-14 Concept at the Detroit Auto Show. The HCD-14 was rumored to be the next-generation Genesis, but Hyundai’s John Krafcik informed members of the press that this simply was not true. This new and very cool Hyundai concept is much more than the next-generation to an already very cool Hyundai model; it’s the next-generation of Hyundai.

The HCD-14 offers a more classic style than the Hyundai models currently on the market, more closely resembling the traditional German auto design. Hyundai says the car features a new human/machine interface that employs a head-up display, driver eye tracking and hand-gesture recognition. Since turning a key to start a vehicle has become so old-fashioned, the new human/machine feature uses optical recognition to identify the driver and initiate the starting sequence. However, starting the car by simply getting inside of it doesn’t seem very cool after you realize that the vehicle’s entire infotainment and HVAC system can also be controlled by “3D hand-gestures” and “eye-tracking.”

A fluidic sculpture, swoopy design and wrap-around headlights are about the only things the HCD-14 Concept has in common with current Hyundai models. The HCD-14 features an “Audi-esque” grille, and looks very avant-garde as compared to the Hyundai we’re used to seeing. Hyundai hasn’t released much more detail beyond what has been revealed at the Detroit Auto Show, but there is sure to be more to come from the ever-evolving Korean automaker.
